Entries marked with a ♥ are staff favorites

♥ Enger, Leif Peace Like a River

Set in Minnesota in the 1960s, this is the story of 11-year-old Reuben, who is convinced that his father can work miracles. The family hopes for a major miracle when Reuben’s brother flees from the law after killing two men who were attacking the family. If you like beautiful language and old-fashioned storytelling, give this book a try.  (A/YA)

Eugenides, Jeffrey The Virgin Suicides

The five Lisbon sisters are brought up in a strict household, and when the youngest kills herself, the oppression of the remaining sisters intensifies. As Therese, Mary, Bonnie and Lux are pulled deeper into isolation by their domineering mother, a group of neighborhood boys become obsessed with liberating the sisters. But the boys don't know that the Lisbon girls are beyond saving.  (A/YA)

♥ Lansens, Lori The Girls

Rose and Ruby Darlen are conjoined twins linked at the side of the head, living in a small town outside Toronto. As the twins near their thirtieth birthday, bookish Rose decides to write a memoir chronicling their story.  (A/YA)

♥ Steve Martin The Pleasure of My Company

Yep, it’s *that* Steve Martin. The dad from the “Cheaper by the Dozen” movies has written a couple of novels, and this one is a good one. It’s the gently humorous story of a man with OCD who bravely goes out looking for love, even if he has to cross the streets only in spots where driveways line up perfectly and touch every copier at every Kinko’s along the way.  (A/YA)

♥ Packer, Ann The Dive from Clausen's Pier

Carrie is feeling stifled with her life in a small town with the same old friends and boyfriend. Just when she’s decided to break up with Mike, he is paralyzed in an accident and Carrie faces an agonizing choice. If you like Jodi Picoult’s books, try this one.  (A/YA)

Palahniuk, Chuck Fight Club

The first rule of Fight Club: You don't talk about Fight Club.  (A/YA)

Picoult, Jodi My Sister's Keeper

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate - a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister - and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.  (A/YA)

Weisburger, Lauren The Devil Wears Prada

Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job "a million girls would die for." Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high-profile, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea finds herself in an office that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! working for the boss from hell.  (A/YA)
