Max Brooks World War Z

The story of the world's desperate battle against the zombie threat, told through a series of first-person accounts by various characters around the world. A Chinese doctor encounters one of the earliest zombie cases at a time when the Chinese government is ruthlessly suppressing any information about the outbreak that will soon spread across the globe. The tale then follows the outbreak via testimony of smugglers, intelligence officials, military personnel and many others who struggle to defeat the zombie menace.  (A/YA)

Harrison, Kim Dead Witch Walking

Rachel Morgan is a runner with the Inderland Runner Services, apprehending law–breakers throughout Cincinnati. She's also a witch, one of the many Inderlanders who revealed themselves after a genetically engineered virus wiped out 50% of humanity. Witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves – the creatures of dreams and nightmares have lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But now they've stopped hiding, and nothing will be the same.  (A/YA)

King, Stephen Carrie

Everybody abused Carrie. Her fanatical mother forbade her everything that was young and fun. She was taunted by her classmates, misunderstood by her teachers, and given up as hopeless by almost everyone. But Carrie had a secret: she could make all kinds of startling, bizarre, and malevolent things happen. And one night, when feeling scorned and humiliated, and growing angrier and angrier, she became the vengeful demon who let the whole town feel her power.  (A/YA)

Matheson, Richard I Am Legend

A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else.  (A/YA)

McKinley, Robin Sunshine

Rae Seddon, nicknamed Sunshine, lives a quiet life working at her stepfather's bakery. One night, she goes out to the lake for some peace and quiet. Big mistake. She is set upon by vampires, who take her to an old mansion. They chain her to the wall and leave her with another vampire, who is also chained. But the vampire, Constantine, doesn't try to eat her. Instead, he implores her to tell him stories to keep them both sane. Realizing she will have to save them both, Sunshine calls on the long-forgotten powers her grandmother began to cultivate in her when she was a child.  (A/YA)
