Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Readalikes

Entries marked with a ♥ are staff favorites

Anderson, Jodi Lynn Peaches

Three teenaged girls from very different backgrounds, thrown together to pick peaches in a Georgia orchard, spend a summer in pursuit of the right boy, the truest of friends, and the perfect peach.  (M,J)

Cabot, Meg All-American Girl

When Sam saves the President’s life, she must deal with fame and glory, as well as frustration with her annoying sisters and her huge crush on her sister’s boyfriend. Sam’s wickedly funny narration makes this a hilarious read. Fluffier than Sisterhood.  (M,J,S)

♥ Desai Hidier, Tanuja Born Confused

After Dimple disses the boy her Indian parents try to fix her up with, she finds out he’s actually pretty cool – but he seems to have hooked up with her best friend. This one’s got some depth; Dimple is a complicated, interesting girl.  (J,S)

Dessen, Sarah Someone Like You

Quiet Halley and popular Scarlett have been friends for years. They balance each other perfectly - until the beginning of their junior year. Then, Scarlett's boyfriend is killed in a motorcycle accident, and soon after, she learns that she is carrying his baby. For the first time, Scarlett really needs Halley. Their friendship may bend under the weight, but it'll never break - because a true friendship is a promise you keep forever.  (J,S)

Dessen, Sarah That Summer

15-year-old Haven deals with her own insecurities, her sister’s upcoming wedding, and her parents’ divorce. This is a funny, realistic portrait of teen life.  (J,S)

Forman, Gayle Sisters in Sanity

When a family trip to the Grand Canyon turns out to be a trick to take her to a remote, all-girl, residential treatment center for unstable teenagers, sixteen-year-old Brit, devastated by her father's duplicity, comes to realize that only through inner strength and the help of other inmates who become her friends can she endure the harsh conditions of the prison-like institution and plan a way to escape.  (J,S)

♥ Juby, Susan Alice, I think

Alice has been homeschooled since she was horrifically humiliated when she went to school dressed as a Hobbit in 1st grade. She decides to turn her life around – go to public school, make some friends, get a good haircut, etc. This is a fun look at an alienated, bright, funny teen.  (J,S)

Lenhard, Elizabeth Chicks with Sticks: It's a Purl Thing

Four teenage girls from very different social cliques at their progressive Chicago high school become friends after forming a knitting club.  (J,S)

Marchetta, Melina Saving Francesca

Francesca transfers to a formerly all-boy school where the handful of girls are not really welcome. She’s miserable and has no friends at school. Then disaster strikes at home – her mother sinks into a deep depression. This one has it all – humor, serious issues, and a little romance.  (J,S)

Moriarty, Jaclyn The Year of Secret Assignments

Three best girlfriends are assigned pen pals – all boys – as a school assignment. Pranks, insults, teasing, flirting, and romance follow. Some humor, but also some serious stuff.  (J,S)

Preble, Laura The Queen Geek Social Club

Seeking more of their own kind and wanting to shake things up at school, fifteen-year-old Shelby and her new best friend, Becca, start a club, but geek solidarity may not solve their problems with weird single parents, guys, or popularity.  (J,S)

Serros, Michele Honey Blonde Chica

Evie and her best friend, Raquel, hang with the Flojos, named for their designer flip-flops. But the return of long-lost amiga mejor Dee Dee wrecks Evie and Raquel's Flojo flow. A few years in Mexico City have transformed their shy, skinny, brunette Dee Dee into a Sangro nightmare. Dee Dee has reinvented herself as "Dela," complete with tight designer threads, freaky blue contacts, and that signature blond hair. When Raquel wants precisely nada to do with the new Dela, Evie finds herself caught between two very different friends.  (J,S)
