Cabot, Meg When Lightning Strikes

Just because her best friend wants to exercise, Jessica Mastriani agrees to walk the two miles home from their high school. Straight into a huge Indiana thunderstorm - and straight into trouble. Not that Jess has never been in trouble before. Her extracurricular activities, instead of cheerleading or 4-H, include fistfights with the football team and monthlong stints in detention - luckily, sitting right next to Rob, the sexiest senior around. But this trouble is serious. Because somehow on that long walk home, Jessica acquired a newfound talent. An amazing power that can be used for good...or for evil.  (J,S)

Cooney, Caroline Code Orange

While conducting research for a school paper on smallpox, Mitty finds an envelope containing 100-year-old smallpox scabs and fears that he has infected himself and all of New York City.  (M,J)

Cooney, Caroline Flight #116 is Down

When a 747 crashes into the deep woods on Heidi's family's estate, she at first believes herself incapable of helping the survivors; she's convinced that her every action is a disappointment to her wealthy, ever-busy parents, who happen to be out of town. But as the night unfolds and she becomes involved in a massive rescue effort and the minute details of human survival, Heidi locates a well of unexpected inner strength and shares no small part in the saving of lives.  (M,J)

Alice Robie's father has been murdered, and the police have an e-mail message in which Alice confesses to the crime. When her own mother suspects her, Alice has no choice but to flee in the hope of proving her innocence. (M,J)

♥ Giles, Gail What Happened to Cass McBride?

Kyle Kirby has planned a cruel and unusual revenge on Cass McBride, the most popular girl in school, for the death of his brother David. He digs a hole. Kidnaps Cass. Puts her in a box - underground. He buries her alive. But lying in the deepest dark, Cass finds a weapon: she uses the power of words to keep her nemesis talking - and herself breathing - during the most (and last?) harrowing 48 hours of her life.  (S)

♥ McCaughrean, Geraldine White Darkness

Taken to Antarctica by the man she thinks of as her uncle for what she believes to be a vacation, Symone - a troubled fourteen year old - discovers that he is dangerously obsessed with seeking Symme's Hole, an opening that supposedly leads into the center of a hollow Earth.  (J,S)

♥ Patterson, James Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment

Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, the Gasman, and Angel are kids who are pretty normal - except that they're 98% human, 2% bird. They grew up in cages, living like rats, and now they're free - but being chased by the wicked, wolf-like Erasers, who've kidnapped Angel. Led by Max, the "Flock" embarks on a quest to find Angel, infiltrate a secret facility to track down their parents, get revenge on an evil traitor, and try to save the world - if there's time.  (J,S)

I'd like this list to contain suspenseful crime fiction titles that aren't whodunnits. The mystery list should contain the whodunnit type of books. ACPL staff, please move a title if you've read it and recognize it's not on the right list. Thanks!
